CREATE, SHARE, REPEAT.
The Calamity Game is a Flash sandbox where you can set up scenes that
unfold based on simple laws of physics acting on a rag doll. These scenes
can be shared with the community of Calamity Game users, who can view the
scene you have created and then build upon it. There is no objective to
Calamity Game; you can't do anything wrong. Calamity Game is as boundless
as your imagination.
Basic Game Play
There are two modes in Calamity Game: Edit and Play.
The Edit Mode allows you to create your own scenes. There are Tools that
allow you to add four types of objects to your scene, each with their own
abilities:
- Pencil (keyboard shortcut "P") - line drawings that are not affected
by gravity (stationary)
- Link (keyboard shortcut "L") - connect two nodes at a fixed distance
and are affected by gravity
- Spring (keyboard shortcut "S") - connect two nodes at an elastic
distance and are affected by gravity. Additionally they can overlap Links
and Pencil Line
- Force (keyboard shortcut "F") - adds a force to a node in the direction
of the arrow
In addition to the above-mentioned objects, there are two other tools
that help with creating scenes:
-
Arrow (keyboard shortcut "A") - moves objects and anchors nodes
-
Eraser (keyboard shortcut "E") - erases objects
Getting Started
To start, click on the Pencil, Link, or Spring from the toolbar on the left.
Then on the Canvas (white area around the rag doll), click and drag anywhere
to set the length and position of the object you want to create. At either
end of the link or spring is a node (blue sphere). These are the points that
allow you to attach other links or springs to each other and chain objects
together.
Moving the Canvas
Hold down the SPACE BAR while using any Tool in order to get the Hand cursor.
Then click and drag with the mouse while still holding the SPACE BAR to move
about the canvas.
Anchoring a Node
Using the Arrow (keyboard shortcut "A") tool, Double Click on a Node. If the
node is red when you roll off, then you have successfully anchored that node.
Adding a Force
The Force Object gives a consistent force to any object (Link, Spring, or Rag Doll).
To use a Force, click on the Force Tool, then click on any node, and drag away from
the node. The direction and length of the force arrow will indicate how amount of
force and direction acting on the object.
Erasing Objects and Deleting your Scene
If you are unhappy with any objects you have created, you can use the Eraser tool
(keyboard shortcut "E) to get rid of them. Additionally, if you want to start a new
scene, click on the trash can icon at the top of the canvas and this will erase all
the objects on the screen and reset the rag doll to the start position.
Playing your Scene
To begin the Play Mode, click on the Play button above the canvas and the scene that
was created in the Edit mode will play out. To stop the action and return to the Edit
mode, simply click the Play button (Stop icon) again. You will notice that during the
Play mode, the Toolbar, Save button, and Trash Can button are disabled. However, Zoom
is still available, so at any point during playback you can zoom in or out to get a
better view of what is going on.
Community, Saving and Sharing
If you are happy with your scene and want to share it with the community, click on the
Save icon next to the Zoom bar. This will bring up a dialogue box that allows you to
name your scene, give yourself credit, and add any comments you have about your
creation. Once completed, click the save icon below the fields. This will save your
scene to our database. At this point, you can view your creation again or copy and
paste its unique URL and send it to a friend.
